MINUTES
November 19, 2009

A meeting of the Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter, S.A.R., was held at 7 PM Thursday, November 19, 2009 at the Golden Corral Restaurant in Lufkin.  Members and guests started arriving after 6 PM to enjoy a Dutch Treat dinner before the meeting

President Fred Preston called the meeting to order.  Lester Sparks gave the Invocation and then Preston led the assemblage in the pledge to the American Flag and the SAR Flag. 

Preston then recognized the guests.  Members present were Mike Everheart, Dist. 10 VP from Tyler;  Harold Newsom, Bob Ham, Woody Gann, Martin Netherland, Lester Sparks and  Fred Preston.  Guests were Betty Preston, Charlene Ham, Charlene Gann, June Everheart, Mildred Sparks,  Joe Ericson and the speaker Carolyn Ericson.. There were 7 members and 7 guests.  

There were no corrections to the minutes so they stand approved.

Treasurer Jeff Corbett was not present.

Under Old Business,   Preston reported that time is growing short for the Eagle Scout Competition.  Entries must be received by the 1st of February.  Mike Everheart had 9 letters to be mailed to Eagles in our area to see if we can get some entries.

Preston reported that both St. Cyprians Episcopal School and Pineywoods Academy have been contacted about the Poster Contest on Bunker Hill and both will participate. Posters must be brought to Gann Medford office no later than January 27th.  Will be voted on at the January 28th meeting.

Duane Hedberg has not responded to the History Teacher Contest.  Maybe next year.

New Business:  Preston reported that he and Jeff Corbett participated in the Veterans Parade on November 7 in downtown Lufkin.  They rode, standing up, on a float sponsored by the VA Clinic.  Jeff displayed the SAR Flag and Preston had the Betsy Ross Flag.  The only picture of the event was a small picture in the Lufkin Daily News showing Jeff on the float.  Both, Preston and Corbett also participated in the Honor America Night pageant.

At this time the changes to the Constitution and By Laws was discussed and voted on.  A motion was made and seconded to add a 2nd Vice President to the Officers.  The Second VP would be in charge of awards and contests.  Motion was approved by a show of hands.

A motion was made and seconded to have the Secretary and President sign a signature card at our bank in order for someone other than the Treasurer to be able to write checks if the Treasurer was not available.  This should only be done in an emergency and has not been necessary in the last 6 years.  Motion was approved by a show of hands.

A motion was made and seconded to change the wording of Quorum to show that 7 members would be required to have a quorum and a vote would require a 2/3 majority to be approved.  This was also passed by a show of hands.

A vote was taken by email on the Term of Office.  Agreed to be 2 years and re electable for a second term of 2 years. The Constitution and By Laws will be re written and sent out by email and mail.  Be prepared to approve or disapprove at the January meeting. 

A motion was made to accept the Constitution and By Laws as amended in their entirety, this was seconded and approved by show of hand.

The last item of new business was the proposed slate of officers for 2010 - 2011.  There were no nominations made from the floor so the following officers were voted on and approved by show of hands.

At this time Preston introduced the speaker for the evening, Carolyn Ericson.  Carolyn was born in Fort Stockton, TX, graduated from Lubbock High School and Texas Technological University.  Married Joe E. Ericson, is the mother of three children and a member of United Methodist Church..She has a genealogical and local history publishing company, has authored over 50 books dealing with family and local history records.  Active in the DAR, Daughters of American Colonists, Colonial Dames XVII Century, United States Daughters of 1812, United Daughters of the Confederacy and National Registrar for the Order of Descendants of Ancient Planters.  Has also served as state officer in Daughters of the Republic of Texas for 10 years, United States Daughters of 1812 for 4 years, past state Regent, Magna Charta Dames and Barons and past State President, Order of Descendants of Ancient Planters.   Edited the query column "Kissin Kuzzins" for 40 years and won first place for query columns in November at the state meeting for Texas State Genealogical Society in San Antonio.  Her talk was about "Texas in 1776" and was very informative and well received.

Preston thanked Carolyn for a very informative talk and presented her with a Certificate of Appreciation.

He announced that the January 28th, 2010 meeting would have Tom Gann as the speaker.  Talk would either be about Sam Houston or Indians in Texas.  Officers will be installed at the January meeting and take over at that time.

Preston then led the assemblage in the closing Admonition and the meeting was adjourned about 7:50 PM.
