LT. NATHAN GANN CHAPTER
SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
LUFKIN, TEXAS

MINUTES
January 22,2009

A meeting of the Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter, S.A.R., was held at 7 PM Thursday January 22, 2009 at the Golden Corral Restaurant in Lufkin.  Members and guests started arriving after 6 PM to enjoy a Dutch Treat dinner before the meeting

President Fred Preston called the meeting to order.  Mike Everheart gave the invocation.  Neal Naranjo then led the assemblage in the pledges to the American Flag and the SAR Flag.

Preston then recognized the guests.  Members present were Jeff Corbett, David Adams, Vance Roberts, Tom Gann, Mike Everheart, Neal Naranjo, Buddy Zeagler, Fred Jacobs and Fred Preston.  Guests were June Everheart, Sue Roberts, Betty Preston, Harry Taylor, Jr., Nelda Taylor, Barbara Corbett, Fred C. Jacobs, Honora Jacobs.   There were 9 members and 8 guests.  Also, we had one guest who became a member at the meeting, Donald Stallings will be a dual member with Pineywoods Chapter and Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter.

There were no corrections to the minutes so they stand approved.

Jeff Corbett gave a treasurers report which showed $5342.95 in the CD account and $1231 in the checking account.  Stallings gave Fred a check for $9.50 for the dual membership which will be turned over to Corbett.  Jeff gave Fred a check for $230.13 which is for his miscellaneous expenses, mostly meals.  Coming up we will need checks for poster contest winners, $35, $25 and $15 for each school ($150)

Under Old Business, Preston said he had posters from St. Cyprians and Pinewoods Academy and we would vote after the meeting.  This was done but results are not official yet.

We did not get any Eagle Scouts to participate in the $300 scholarship competition.  Had some discussion as to whether this was due to lack of publicity or to the dollar amount.  In 2009 Fred will make sure there are several newspaper articles about the competition in an effort to get some takers.

Mike Everheart prepared another application for a grant from Walmart.  Will apply after February 1.

On December 2, Jeff Corbett and Neal Naranjo participated in the Lufkin Christmas parade along with Lariena Nichols (our drummer girl), and banner carriers Charlot Weeks and Debbie Newsom.  Had a large crowd but unfortunately no pictures.  Neal also did a show and tell at Pineywoods Academy and no pictures.

Neal displayed the larger Declaration of Independence document (23" x 19" I believe) which was the same size as the original and looks like the original.  He plans to hand make frames for the documents.  Planning on 14 copies to be placed in 14 local schools at a cost not to exceed $25 per copy, framed.  Tom Gann made a motion to do this and Fred Jacobs seconded.  Motion carried.  Donald Stallings was also going to bring some small booklets on the Constitution.  It was also decided to put a black name plate with gold lettering on the frame showing: Line 1  Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter   Line 2   Sons of the American Revolution  Line 3   Lufkin, Texas .

Fred made another request for members to write out a one page autobiography showing the highlights of their lives, their hobbies and interest.  This is strictly for the chapter use and distribution within the chapter.

The annual meeting will be held in Nacogdoches at the Fredonia Hotel on March 20, 21 and 22.   Go to http://www.txssar2009.info/ to get more info, the schedule of events, registration form etc.  June Everheart told the women present that there are events for the women also and they should participate.  Tom Gann, Neal Naranjo and Jeff Corbett said they would cover from 1 to 5 PM on Friday.  It was questioned why we would need anyone there from 1-3 on Saturday.

Under New Business:  Fred talked about the changed schedule and wondered if that was the cause of the small attendance at this meeting.  Members are requested to let him know if they will have conflicts with the 4th Thursday.

The chapter has added two new pages to the web page, one on the Color Guard with information on getting a uniform and the other on a Speakers Bureau presently consisting of Tom Gann and Neal Naranjo.

At this time Fred Preston called Fred Jacobs to come forward and presented him with a 25 years of service medal. Fred joined 6/9/1984.  He is currently 91 years old, Honora is 90 and they have been married 67 years.

Bob Inselmann was to receive his membership certificate but couldn't be at the meeting.  Harry Taylor, Jr., and his wife Nelda Taylor accepted the certificate for their son Harry Taylor III.  Harry Taylor, Jr. read several pages about their ancestor Wright.

Neal introduced the speaker, Daniel Rankin, History teacher at Angelina College who talked about "What's the Beef ?".  Why were the colonist upset with Britain and why did they go to war.  He also talked about Paul Revere and the fact that he was only one of three who made that famous ride but he became popular because of Longfellow's poem and he was used because  his name rhymed with 'hear'.  (Listen my children and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere)  The other riders, Dawes and Prescott didn't rhyme.  Daniel was a very animated and interesting speaker and there was a lengthy discussion of history after the talk was officially over.
Preston presented Daniel with a Certificate of Appreciation for a talk well done.

The next meeting will be March 26.  Speaker will be Tom Lawrence, the new State President and we will make awards to Poster Contest winners.

Preston led the assemblage in the Closing Admonition and closed the meeting about 8:20. Then members voted on posters.

Respectfully submitted: Fred Preston
