CHAPTER 28 LUFKIN, TEXAS

Minutes March 25, 2010

A meeting of the Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter, S.A.R., was held at 7 PM Thursday March 25, 2010 at the Golden Corral Restaurant in Lufkin.  Members and guests started arriving after 6 PM to enjoy a Dutch Treat dinner before the meeting

President Fred Preston called the meeting to order.  Lester Sparks gave the invocation. Preston then led the assemblage in the pledges to the American Flag and the SAR Flag.

Preston then recognized the guests.  Preston then introduced the guests which included the Poster Contest winners from Pineywoods Academy and their family.  These were 1st place, Jason Swan and parents Sharon and Todd Swan; 2nd place Destiny Moultrie and mother Sylvia and grandfather Horace Moultrie; 3rd place Marcy Chavez and her mother Maria Chavez and brother Oscar Chavez.  Lisa Lee art teacher and her husband El Ray Lee and David Greak, Principal.  Other guests included Betty Preston, Mary Ann Naranjo, June Everheart, Charlene Ham, Dick Reddy (prosp. member), Ben and Ellen Pyle, Sam and Mary Griffin, Vicki Gann, Mildred Sparks and the speaker William Covington.  Members present were:  J. Neal Naranjo, Pres., Bob Ham, 1st VP., Burl Ivy, 2nd VP, Tom Gann, Sgt. at Arms, Mike Everheart, Dist. 10 VP, Martin Netherland, Jeff Corbett, Treasurer, Fred Jacobs, Lester Sparks, Chaplain and Fred Preston, Secretary.  In all there were 24 guests and 10 members

After introducing the guests, Preston called Mike Everheart, Dist. 10 Vice President , to come forward.   Everheart then swore J. Neal Naranjo in as President of Chapter 28, Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter.  The other officers had been sworn in during the January meeting.

Old Business:  Naranjo asked Everheart about the Wal-Mart grant.  Everheart then presented the grant request and gave it to Preston to contact Wal-Mart.  Naranjo then asked for a motion to purchase flag stands up to $50.  Motion made by Tom Gann and seconded by Mike Everheart.  This was necessary because we have been using stands which belonged to Kiwanis and as of April14th, Kiwanis will be meeting at Crown Colony.    There was some discussion about the Sparks grave marking but no date was set.  Naranjo indicated he would be on a dinosaur dig from May 8 till sometime in June and would miss the next meeting.

At this time Naranjo talked briefly about the Battle of Bunker Hill and then called the Poster Contest winners forward to receive their check, Certificate of Appreciation  and recognition. Pineywoods Academy had 19 participants and St. Cyprian's had one.

At this time, Neal called Bob Ham forward to introduce the speaker for the evening.  Bill Covington is from Cedar Hills, TX and teaches in Waxahachie.  He has made many presentations on the "Revolutionary Soldier".  He wears a uniform that looks more like that of a fighting man, has a authentic long rifle (weighs 10 pounds), and displays other items of clothing, and things a soldier might have in his possession.  He also talked about various expressions that originated during the Revolutionary War, like "lock, stock and barrel".  It was a very interesting talk and enjoyed but both young and old.

After the talk, Neal Naranjo presented Bill with a Certificate of Appreciation and thanked him for a job well done.  The meeting was adjourned about 8:20 PM.
