A meeting of the Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter, S. A. R., was held at 7 PM Thursday, November 18, 2004 at Golden Corral Restaurant in Lufkin, Texas. Members and guests arrived after 6 PM to eat prior to the meeting.

Prior to the meeting Preston passed out member rosettes to Fred Jacobs, Tom Gann, Lester Sparks, Jeff Corbett, and Ed Shelton. Woody and David will have past president pins instead. New members will be presented a pin at their first meeting.

Members attending were: Fred Jacobs, Tom H. Gann, Fred Preston, Lester Sparks, Jeff Corbett, David Adams, Woody Gann and Ed Shelton. Guests were Sally and Mac McCoy, Mary and Sam Griffin, Stella Frances Naranjo and J. Neal Naranjo, Charlie and Nancy Hamilton, Vicki Gann, Benegene Gann Kring, Honora Jacobs, Fred Jacobs, Jr., Mildred Sparks and Betty Preston. J. Neal Naranjo is a charter member but his membership lapsed. He will be reinstated in January.

President Fred Preston called the meeting to order. Chaplain Lester Sparks gave the invocation. Ed Shelton led the assemblage in the pledge to the U.S. Flag and the SAR Flag all standing and in unison. (This was the first meeting with the SAR Flag.)

Preston asked for a motion to accept the September minutes.  Tom Gann so moved and Fred Jacobs seconded. The motion carrried.

Treasurer, Jeff Corbett, gave a report. We have $1029.54 in the checking account with one check for $147 outstanding and $6,483.81 in our CD account.

Under old business, Preston reported that the St Cypians school will start on the Posters after Christmas. They will present their 3 best in late January. David Adams and Jeff Corbett both volunteered to help judge the posters. Jeff asked what the awards would be and at the time I couldn’t remember but it was decided at the August meeting to award $75, $50 and $25 actual value. The $75 was expected to buy 3 - $50 bonds and so forth.

Also, under old business, Preston requested biographical sketches be returned as soon as possible. If you don’t know some of the information or don’t want to provide some information, do what you will but get them back to me ASAP. This goes for our out of town members also.

Under new business, Preston reported that letters were mailed to 6 Eagle Scouts on November 11. They will have until December 15th to get them in. Jeff Corbett and Neal Naranjo agreed to help judge the applications. We will award one applicant with $100 and this would be at the January meeting. The Troop Leader, the winning applicant and his parents and the Scout District Chair will be invited to the meeting.

Fred Preston introduced the speaker for the evening, Retired Lt. General Orren ‘Cotton’ Whiddon. Cotton presented an excellent history of the middle east past and present. He discussed the reason we went to war with Iraq and what we hope to accomplish. The group asked many questions including questions on China, Korea and Iran.

Ret. Lt. Gen. Orren 'Cotton' Whiddon

Preston led the assemblage in the SAR Closing Admonition, all standing and in unison.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:10 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

President Fred Preston
